Most parents wish, and hope, that their children will have a better launch pad than they themselves had when they blasted off from childhood to the job market. For the Chinese the education of their child is of the prime importance. Yes child not children, China still has a one-child policy and the parents, all four grandparents and social and peer pressure push the Chinese child to achieve the best possible results. In addition to regular schooling many parents will invest heavily in extra-curriculum study (not sports and enrichment) programmes. A Chinese friend of mine told me that during the last two years his son was at school he (the father) removed the television and computer from the house. In the evenings the parents would only speak in whispers so as not to disturb his studies. I asked him if his son was a bad student, or was being punished for something. He laughed and told me that this was the accepted norm and that all was being sacrificed in order to try and gain entry to a good university. Traditionally, children in China are their parents social security and pension plans. That is to say that, even today, frequently the younger generation is supporting the elder. Often once they have jobs their parents will retire. I have met (though not in the big cities) many old age pensioners who are only 45 years old!
Most foreigners do not want to place their children under such stress, and even if the language is not a problem prefer to pay a lot of money in order to send their offspring to international schools. Basically, anywhere you find a large number of foreigners you will find an international school or schools. In the larger cities Beijing and Shanghai there are a large number of international schools and kindergartens that vary from a local school that caters for foreigners, to schools affiliated with well-known international names such as some of the English Public/Independent Schools.
